The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is unlike any other. The museum was once the 1916 winter estate of the millionaire, bachelor, and business owner James Deering and is used now as an innovative place that inspires people to embrace the cultural vitality and environmental sustainability of the world. Even if you aren’t a history junkie or a garden enthusiast, you will find something to love about this museum!
The gardens of the estate are among the most elaborate in the country. As you venture through the gardens, you will feel as though you are walking through seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France and Italy. Low hedges in geometric arrangements prevail in the central area of the garden and is followed by a series of different gardens – the Secret Garden, the Theater Garden, the Maze Garden, and the Fountain Garden. For garden admirers interested in what is blooming, visit the museum’s what’s in bloom website.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Events
Over the years, the estate and its surrounding gardens have been used for important ceremonies, events, and programs for the community. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan received Pope John Paul II at the estate for his first visit to Miami, and in 1994, President Bill Clinton hosted the First Summit of the Americans at Vizcaya. The museum continues to host a variety of events for the community to enjoy.
Every Sunday, March through May, Vizcaya Village hosts the Vizcaya Village Farmers Market. From 9 a.m. until 2 a.m., rain or shine, the public is invited to explore the market and the Village. Over 30 vendors set up at the market for you to shop their fresh-made delicacies and hand-crafted goods – fruits and vegetables, baked goods, vegan products, and more. When you’ve finished shopping, explore the Village and all of its agricultural history, as it is the inspiration behind the farmers market. In 1916, the Village was filled with greenhouses and fields that supplied fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables to make it self-sufficient. If you decide to visit Vizcaya, you will see why it is such a popular wedding venue. The estate’s majestic architecture and European-style gardens are stunning – not only for weddings but also for corporate affairs and social events. The estate can be rented during day or night every day of the year, except for major holidays. Vizcaya has hosted beautiful daytime garden ceremonies, elegant cocktail parties and receptions – its combination of natural beauty, historic architecture, and bayfront views make it one of the most unique and iconic venues in all of Florida.
